I’m our thomas — an Exeter, NH-based haiku poet and artist working primarily in mixed-media collage (with occasional forays into drawing, iPhonography and other media).

As a collage artist, I’m particularly intrigued by the possibility inherent in our human detritus — trash, found objects, discards, flotsam, ephemera. Questions around what has value and who or what bestows value abound in my process and work. I enjoy re-imagining the place of disparate elements into works that invite introspection and a reassessment of the viewer’s expectations or that spark flights of fancy, imagination, and curiosity about the potential of our inner lives and hearts.

As a haiku poet, I tend to author poems about human loneliness, displacement, and alienation and the way nature serves to highlight, console, or counter those feelings. Haiku of mine have appeared in the journals Modern Haiku, is/let, Seashores, Acorn, and Failed Haiku, among others. My poems have been selected as a finalist in the Trailblazer Competition (2021), a semifinalist for a Touchstone Award from The Haiku Foundation, and for inclusion in the Red Moon Anthology (2021) of English-Language Haiku.

As a photographer, I use only a phone’s camera, in keeping with an aesthetic of simplicity and in-the-moment responsiveness. I predominantly rely on the Hipstamatic app and square formatting. In many ways, my photographs bridge my collage work with my haiku sensibilities: an emphasis on the small or insignificant or out-of-the-way made central and of interest.
